POSTCARD ELEVEN
From the Warehouse Where Angels Wait

Some stories begin with a song. This one began inside a whisky warehouse.

Standing among rows of ageing casks at the Glenfiddich Distillery, one sculpture captured my attention more than anything else. It was called The Angel's Share—a quiet reminder that every cask gives up a small part of itself to the air as it matures.

Angel's Share is a postcard inspired by that moment and by the beautiful idea that even what disappears can become part of something greater.

ANGEL'S SHARE

Inspired by the Angel's Share sculpture at the Glenfiddich Distillery.

ABOUT THE SONG

Every cask of Scotch whisky slowly loses a small amount of liquid as it matures in oak. Distillers affectionately call this natural evaporation the Angel's Share—the portion believed to be enjoyed by the angels.

During a visit to the Glenfiddich Distillery, the Angel's Share sculpture inside one of the traditional warehouses transformed this familiar whisky term into something much more profound. It became a symbol of patience, craftsmanship and the invisible passage of time.

As one of the fourteen musical postcards from Scotland – A Love Letter, Angel's Share celebrates Scotland's whisky heritage while reflecting on the beauty of letting time quietly do its work.

SONGWRITER'S NOTE

I've visited many distilleries throughout Scotland, but one moment has stayed with me more than any other.

Standing inside the Glenfiddich warehouse, surrounded by casks that had been resting for decades, I found myself looking at the Angel's Share sculpture. It was a simple idea, beautifully expressed.

Every year, a little whisky disappears into the air. Nothing seems to happen, yet year after year the whisky becomes smoother, deeper and more complex.

It struck me that life often works the same way. Time quietly changes us, often without us noticing.

Angel's Share was born from that moment.

Lyrics:

Down in the Highlands where the cold winds moan
Oak barrels sleep in the dark alone
Years drip by like rain somewhere
And heaven takes its cut from the angel’s share

Dust on the bottles, fire in the grain
Smoke in the valley, ghosts in the rain
Old men swear when the air smells rare
That the angels came down for their share

A little for the sinners
A little for the saints
A little disappears
And no one makes complaint

Hey — raise ‘em up high
To the fire in the air
Hey — raise ‘em up high
To the nights we can’t get back
And the angel’s share

Yeah heaven takes a little
Every single year
A little bit of whiskey
A little bit of tears

Whoa-oh-oh
The angel’s share

Warehouse shadows and a creaking floor
Time keeps knocking on an old oak door
Love burns slow like a peat fire there
Then drifts away in the angel’s share

I had a woman with eyes so wild
Sweet as honey, hard as rye
One night gone like smoke somewhere
Another memory in the angel’s share

A little for the sinners
A little for the saints
A little disappears
And no one makes complaint

Hey — raise ‘em up high
To the fire in the air
Hey — raise ‘em up high
To the nights we can’t get back
And the angel’s share

Yeah heaven takes a little
Every single year
A little bit of whiskey
A little bit of tears

Whoa-oh-oh
The angel’s share

Maybe nothing really lasts forever
Maybe heaven steals the best
Maybe every drop we lose down here
Is just the angels getting blessed

Hey — raise ‘em up high
To the smoke and the prayer
Hey — raise ‘em up high
To the broken souls still hanging there
In the angel’s share

Hey — raise ‘em up high
To the smoke and the prayer
Hey — raise ‘em up high
To the broken souls still hanging there
In the angel’s share

Yeah heaven takes a little
Every single year
A little bit of whiskey
A little bit of tears

But the longer it burns
The smoother it gets
So here’s to the ones
We’ll never forget

Whoa-oh-oh
The angel’s share

Gone like smoke in the air
Gone like smoke in the air
The angel’s share
