POSTCARD TEN
From the Casks That Hold More Than Whisky
Some spirits mature in oak. Others live on in the people who came before us.
In Scotland, every whisky tells a story that spans generations. The distiller who filled a cask may never taste the whisky that emerges thirty or forty years later. Yet a part of their knowledge, their patience and their craftsmanship lives on in every bottle.
Some Spirits Never Die... is a postcard to Scotland's whisky makers and to the timeless idea that true craftsmanship can outlive the people who created it.
SOME SPIRITS NEVER DIE...
Inspired by Scotland's whisky heritage and the people whose spirit lives on.
ABOUT THE SONG
Every bottle of Scotch whisky is a conversation between generations.
When a cask is filled today, the whisky inside may not be bottled for thirty or even forty years. By then, the distiller who created it may no longer be alive. Yet their knowledge, experience and dedication remain part of every drop.
Some Spirits Never Die... explores this beautiful dual meaning of the word spirit. It is both the spirit that matures inside the cask and the human spirit that continues long after a lifetime has ended.
As one of the fourteen musical postcards from Scotland – A Love Letter, the song celebrates Scotland's whisky heritage while paying tribute to the people whose legacy can still be tasted decades later.
SONGWRITER'S NOTE
During a distillery tour, I heard someone explain that the person filling a cask today may never see the whisky at its best.
That thought stayed with me.
Whisky teaches patience unlike anything else. It reminds us that the finest things in life are often created for future generations rather than ourselves.
That's when I realised the word spirit carries two meanings. One matures inside the cask. The other lives inside the people who dedicate their lives to creating something that will outlast them.
Some Spirits Never Die... is my tribute to both.
Lyrics:
“Some spirits never die…”
“They just flow on through time…”
I woke where the Highlands roll,
Morning light on a wandering soul.
Purple heather, endless sky,
Cold sea wind drifting by.
Every road felt meant to be,
Like the Spirit of Spey was calling me.
Golden hills and coastal rain,
One look and you’re never the same.
Speyside nights, Highland skies,
Hold me close till morning light.
Let the river carry you,
To the Spirit of Spey.
Oh-oh-oh, don’t let go,
Hear that Highland river flow.
Some spirits never die —
They just flow on through time.
Old rail tracks through fields of green,
Ghosts of all they’ve heard and seen.
River shining in the sun,
Silver salmon always run.
Dufftown glowing late at night,
Golden whisky, firelight.
Some old maker dreamed this flame,
Long before we knew his name.
Now his spirit still remains,
Flowing softly through the grain.
Friendly faces, open doors,
Makes you wanna stay once more.
Speyside nights, Highland skies,
Hold me close till morning light.
Let the river carry you,
To the Spirit of Spey.
Oh-oh-oh, don’t let go,
Hear that Highland river flow.
Some spirits never die —
They just flow on through time.
Cragganmore in candlelight,
Fire glowing warm and bright.
Tony laughing, Helen smiling,
Makes the long road feel inviting.
“One more dram before you go…”
Highland stars shining low.
And somewhere in an old oak room,
A whisky waits beyond the gloom.
The hands that filled those casks one day
May be gone — but their spirit stays.
Speyside nights, Highland skies,
Sing with me beneath the sky.
Let the river carry you,
To the Spirit of Spey.
Oh-oh-oh, don’t let go,
Hear that Highland river flow.
Some spirits never die —
They just flow on through time.
Running through me…
Running through me…
The Spirit of Spey…
Some roads fade when you move on,
Some stay long after they’re gone.
And some old souls still find their way
In the Spirit of Spey…
“Some spirits never die…”
