POSTCARD SIX
From Scotland’s Storm-Battered Islands
Out here, the weather does not interrupt the journey. It becomes part of it.
Across Scotland’s western islands, Atlantic winds sweep over dark cliffs, waves break against ancient shores and the sky can change within minutes. These are landscapes shaped by water, weather and time.
Stormy Islands is a postcard from places where nature still sets the rules—and where every storm makes the moments of calm feel even more precious.
STORMY ISLANDS
Inspired by Scotland’s wild and windswept islands.
ABOUT THE SONG
Scotland’s islands are places of extraordinary beauty, but they are never completely predictable.
Stormy Islands was inspired by journeys along remote coastlines where powerful Atlantic weather can transform the landscape within moments. Sunshine disappears behind dark clouds, calm seas become restless and the wind carries the sound of waves far across the hills.
Yet the song is not only about difficult weather. It is about the character of these islands and the people who call them home. Life here has always required patience, resilience and respect for the forces of nature.
As one of the fourteen musical postcards from Scotland – A Love Letter, Stormy Islands celebrates the untamed spirit of Scotland’s coast—a place where beauty and hardship exist side by side.
SONGWRITER'S NOTE
Some of my strongest memories of Scotland were made in weather that most people would describe as terrible.
I remember standing near the coast with rain moving sideways, the wind pulling at my jacket and the sea crashing against the rocks below. There was nowhere to hide from the landscape, and that was exactly what made the moment unforgettable.
Stormy Islands was written for those wild days when Scotland reveals its true character. The storms may slow the journey, but they also make you feel completely alive.
Lyrics:
I took the road where maps run out,
Salt in air, no room for doubt.
Northbound tires, a restless drive,
Chasing proof I’m still alive.
Stormy islands, wild and free,
Stone and wind remember me.
Mist and fire, sea and sky,
Every road says don’t ask why.
Stormy islands, hard and true,
Every tide pulls me to you.
Skye wears fog like second skin,
Hills fade out, then pull you in.
Ghosts in rain and mountain blue,
She won’t speak — she watches you.
Ei-la breathes in smoke and flame,
Peat and oak repeat her name.
Whisky gold and ocean air,
One slow sip — the storm is there.
Stormy islands, wild and free,
Stone and wind remember me.
Mist and fire, sea and sky,
Every road says don’t ask why.
Stormy islands, hard and true,
Every tide pulls me to you.
Harris, Lewis, rough and wide,
Wind-scarred hills and rising tide.
Work and wool and endless rain,
Truth is earned through grit and pain.
Orkney carved in rock and time,
Circles older than the line.
Viking ghosts and standing stone,
You never walk these paths alone.
Shetland holds the edge of light,
Endless day, relentless night.
Fiddle cries in empty air,
Stay too long — you’re stripped and bare.
If I stop, the wind moves on,
If I stay, I’m almost gone.
Every island leaves its mark,
Fire in the cold and spark in dark.
Stormy islands, wild and free,
They keep cutting into me.
Stone and wind, sea and sky,
Every road still asks me why.
Stormy islands, rough and true,
I keep leaving — back to you.
